This was very good read. It captured a child's reaction to death very well; the confusing disorder of it all. I enjoyed the book very much.
Well written story of the journey of a child as she deals with the loss of a sibling. Her parents, as well, struggle with the loss and don't know how to help their daughter. I laughed out loud at parts in this book, but also shed tears at the low points. This is a very touching, "real life" tale of sorrow and how we find ways through it.
The kids and I really enjoyed reading this book together. It is always wonderful to see things from another person's point of view and experience through their story things that we may not have yet experienced on our own. I believe that sharing this and other stories of troubles and courage helps to teach my children empathy and compassion. I recommend this book to others.
Umbrella Summer made me realize that you have to keep your umbrella of worry down in order to feel the sunshine. You must also realize when it is time to let go of the ones who passed away. Sadly I have gone through something similar in a way , but not as intense as Annie. My great grandma passed away when she was 92. I had broken my ankle about five days before so i couldn't go to her funeral and pay my respects. She was probably one of my greatest role models because she has gone through so much and kept a positive attitude her whole life. After reading this i know i need to let my umbrella down and feel the sunshine
Umbrella Summer by Lisa Graf is a wonderful story about a young girl who is afraid of having an accident-any kind of accident. She goes through boxes of band-aids and takes to reading a huge doctor's manuel for better diagnosing of her ailments. She has real reason to be afraid though as her older brother recently passes from an undetected heart problem and this is her way of working through her grief. This book is really well-written. Please have a box of tissues ready for last half of book!
A young girl and her family struggle with the death of her 12 year old brother. Our hero is Annie Z who strugles with a terrible case of fear. She meets her new neighbor who helps her understand that life does go on. In turn, she helps her parents with the grief they suffer and provides her community with a way to celebrate her brothers life.
The lesson it tells and the great wording ot showed was a great part also the friendship it had .
